Here is the honest answer to the question, before the list. No animal has an IQ score. IQ is a test built for humans, standardised on humans, and it does not transfer to any other species. Every ranked table of animal IQ numbers you have seen online, including the one that used to sit on this page, was invented.
What follows instead is the list of animals people most often call stupid, and what the research actually shows about each one. Several of them turn out to be doing something far more interesting than being dim.
Why Animal IQ Scores Are Not Real
An IQ score compares a person against a population of other people on a specific battery of tasks. There is no equivalent population, and no equivalent battery, for a starfish. You cannot ask an octopus to complete a matrix reasoning item, and a score of 4 for a cockroach would mean nothing even if you could produce one.
Cognitive ecologists do measure intelligence, but they measure it as a set of separate abilities, each tied to what an animal actually has to do to survive, which is why the smartest animals in the world are smart in completely different ways. A wandering albatross navigating an ocean and a cleaner wrasse tracking a hundred individual clients are both doing something extremely hard, and neither one maps onto a human test.
How Animal Intelligence Is Actually Measured
These are the four measures that appear in the real literature, and what each one can and cannot tell you.

Keep that last column in mind for the rest of this list. Most animals labelled stupid were simply asked to do something no part of their life ever required.
There is a habit you pick up surveying across a lot of taxa, which is that you stop ranking animals and start asking what each one is solving. A jerboa on a night transect and a jellyfish in a plankton sample are both easy to write off if you are grading them against a mammal on a puzzle box. Watch either one doing the job it was actually shaped for and the grading stops feeling like a serious question.
1. Pandas: Slow, Specialised, Not Stupid

The charge against pandas is that they eat a food that barely feeds them and then look surprised about it. The Smithsonian National Zoo puts the numbers plainly: a panda must spend 10 to 16 hours a day foraging and eating, getting through 70 to 100 pounds of bamboo, because it has the digestive system of a carnivore and is trying to live on grass.
That is not a failure of judgement. It is a trade. Bamboo is abundant, available all year and almost nobody else wants it. The panda took an uncontested food source and paid for it with a permanent eating schedule. Specialisation on that scale is risky, which is exactly why pandas struggle when bamboo forests fragment, but it is a strategy, not stupidity.
2. Koalas: A Smooth Brain and a Poisonous Diet

Koalas have an unusually smooth brain for their body size, and they are famously inflexible in captivity: a koala that eats eucalyptus leaves off a branch will sometimes fail to recognise the same leaves on a flat surface.
The likely reason is energetic. Eucalyptus is low in calories and loaded with toxins the koala has to neutralise in its liver. Brain tissue is the most expensive tissue an animal can run. An animal on that diet cannot afford a large, folded, hungry brain, and koalas sleep up to 20 hours a day for the same reason. Behavioural flexibility is a luxury item, and the koala budget does not stretch to it.
3. Sloths: Slowness Is the Whole Strategy
Sloths move slowly because leaves contain almost no usable energy and take weeks to digest in a multichambered stomach. A sloth’s metabolic rate is among the lowest of any mammal, and its muscle mass is roughly a third less than you would expect for its size.
That slowness is also camouflage. Predators such as harpy eagles hunt by detecting movement, and a sloth that barely moves is a sloth that is not seen. Algae growing in the fur completes the effect. An animal that has survived tens of millions of years on a diet nothing else wanted is not badly designed.
4. Turkeys: No, They Do Not Drown in the Rain

This is the most repeated claim on the whole topic, and it is false. Snopes rates it False, and the anatomy settles it: a turkey’s eyes sit on the sides of its head, so it has no binocular vision straight upward and tilts its head sideways to look up. It cannot stand there gazing into the rain because it cannot gaze upward at all.
Real turkeys are socially complex birds with a large vocal repertoire and sharp threat detection. Anyone who has tried to walk up on a wild flock knows they are very difficult to approach, which is the opposite of what the myth implies.

5. Ostriches: They Have Never Buried Their Heads

The McGill University Office for Science and Society traces this one back to ancient Rome. Ostriches do not bury their heads in sand, and no observer has ever recorded it, because an animal that could not see or breathe would be an easy meal.
Two real behaviours created the illusion. Ostriches dig shallow nest scrapes and push their beaks down into them several times a day to turn the eggs. And when a threat appears at distance, they drop the head and neck flat to the ground to break up their outline, which from far away looks exactly like a head disappearing into the earth.
The rest of the ostrich is not the work of a foolish animal either. It runs at around 43 miles per hour, it has the largest eye of any land vertebrate, and it can kick hard enough to kill a lion.
6. Jerboas: Elite Escape Artists, Not Clumsy Jumpers

This page used to claim that jerboas struggle to learn to jump. The research says the opposite, and it is worth correcting properly.
Talia Moore and colleagues, working across the University of Michigan, Harvard and UC San Diego, published a study in Nature Communications in 2017 comparing bipedal jerboas with quadrupedal jirds. The jerboas switched constantly between hopping, skipping and running, changing stride length, direction and speed step by step. That unpredictability made them measurably harder for predators to intercept.
A jerboa is not failing to jump properly. It is running an evasion strategy that a straight line runner cannot match.
7. Komodo Dragons: Built for Ambush, Not Deliberation

Komodo dragons make the list because male combat is brutal and because they will gorge to the point of immobility after a kill. Both are real, and both are rational for the animal.
An ambush predator that may not eat again for weeks should eat everything available now. Immobility afterwards is the cost of that. Meanwhile Komodos in captivity play with objects, recognise individual keepers and can be trained, which is not the profile of a simple reflex machine.
8. Goldfish: The Three Second Memory Is Fiction
Goldfish remember for weeks, months and in some tests years. Culum Brown at Macquarie University, who has studied fish cognition for more than 25 years, points out that the evidence has been sitting in the literature since the 1950s and 1960s.
Goldfish learn feeding locations and hold them, learn to press one coloured paddle rather than another for a reward, navigate mazes, and remember how to escape a net long after the event. The three second figure has no experimental origin at all.
9. Sheep: They Can Recognise Your Face
Sheep are the standard shorthand for mindless following, which makes the actual research fairly startling. Professor Jenny Morton’s group at the University of Cambridge trained eight sheep to identify photographs of celebrities and published the results in Royal Society Open Science in 2017.
The sheep picked the trained face 8 times out of 10. Shown a photograph of their own handler with no training at all, they picked him 7 times out of 10, and did a visible double take the first time. Morton described their face recognition as comparable with that of humans and monkeys.
Flocking is not stupidity either. It is one of the oldest and most effective antipredator strategies there is.
10. Jellyfish: No Brain, and Still Learning
Jellyfish belong at the bottom of any list built on brain anatomy, because they genuinely have no brain. They run on a nerve net, and the old ranked tables gave them a made up score somewhere near zero.
Then in 2023 Jan Bielecki at Kiel University and Anders Garm at the University of Copenhagen published a study in Current Biology showing that Caribbean box jellyfish, Tripedalia cystophora, learn by association. Inside a 7.5 minute trial the jellyfish roughly halved their collisions with obstacles and increased their distance from walls by about 50 percent. Garm noted that they learn at about the same pace as far more complex animals.
An animal with 24 eyes, no brain and demonstrable associative learning is the clearest possible argument against ranking intelligence on a single scale.
What Low Intelligence Actually Means in Ecology
Every animal on this list is a survivor of a long selection process, and none of them was selected for the things a human test rewards. A koala on a toxic diet cannot afford a big brain. A panda pays for an uncontested food. A sloth trades speed for invisibility. A jellyfish solves navigation with no brain at all.
Intelligence in ecology is not a ladder with humans at the top. It is a set of tools matched to a job, and the best animal behaviour books spend most of their pages on exactly that point, and the sensible question is never how smart an animal is, but what problem it evolved to solve.
