Keystone species. A species whose effect on its community is far larger than its abundance would predict. Real life example: sea otters in North Pacific kelp forests. Remove the otters and sea urchin numbers explode, grazing the kelp forest down to bare urchin barrens.

Ecological succession. The predictable sequence of species that colonise a site after a disturbance. Real life example: Mount St. Helens after the 1980 eruption, where prairie lupines fixed nitrogen into bare pumice and made the ground habitable for the plants and conifers that followed.

Carrying capacity. The maximum population an environment can support with the food, water and space available. Real life example: the reindeer introduced to St. Matthew Island in 1944 grew from 29 animals to roughly 6,000 by 1963, stripped the slow growing lichen they depended on, and crashed to fewer than 50.
