They absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, shaping Earth’s atmosphere while generating organic compounds that fuel food webs from the smallest herbivore to the largest predator. Whether they’re towering forest trees, ocean phytoplankton, or […] - [Trophic Levels in Ecology](https://simplyecologist.com/ecology/trophic-levels-in-ecology/): Trophic levels represent the sequential steps through which energy flows in an ecosystem, from producers like grasses and phytoplankton that capture sunlight, to herbivores that consume them, and finally to predators at higher positions. Each transfer retains only about 10% of the available energy, which explains why ecosystems support fewer top predators than plant-eaters. These feeding relationships reveal how communities maintain balance and […] - [Food Web in Ecology](https://simplyecologist.com/ecology/food-web-in-ecology/): A food web represents the interconnected feeding relationships within an ecosystem, mapping how energy and nutrients flow through multiple pathways rather than along a single chain. Organisms occupy different trophic levels—feeding positions that determine their role—while approximately 90% of energy dissipates at each transfer, creating the pyramid structure observed in nature. This complexity matters deeply: diverse webs absorb disturbances without collapsing, whereas […] - [Food chain in Ecology](https://simplyecologist.com/ecology/food-chain-in-ecology/): A food chain traces the linear pathway of energy transfer through an ecosystem, beginning with producers—plants and phytoplankton that convert sunlight into usable energy—and moving through successive trophic levels, or feeding positions, as herbivores consume plants and carnivores hunt other animals. Each transfer loses approximately ninety percent of energy to heat and metabolic processes, which explains why ecosystems support fewer predators […] - [Ecological Hierarchy](https://simplyecologist.com/ecology/ecological-hierarchy/): The ecological hierarchy organizes life from individual organisms to populations—groups of the same species—then to communities where different species interact, and finally to ecosystems that include both living things and their physical environment. Each level builds upon the previous one, creating increasing complexity as energy flows and nutrients cycle through interconnected webs of life. Understanding this structure helps scientists predict how changes at one […] - [Abiotic Factors in Ecology](https://simplyecologist.com/ecology/abiotic-factors-in-ecology/): Abiotic factors—the non-living components of ecosystems such as sunlight, temperature, water availability, and soil composition—shape which organisms can survive in any given environment and how they’ll adapt to meet those conditions. These physical and chemical elements operate independently of life yet profoundly influence species distribution, establishing metabolic boundaries through temperature gradients and dictating plant communities through nutrient availability. Desert cacti withstand extreme […] - [Biotic Factors in Ecology](https://simplyecologist.com/ecology/biotic-factors-in-ecology/): Biotic factors—the living components of an ecosystem, including plants, animals, fungi, and bacteria—interact through predation, competition, and symbiosis to shape the flow of energy and nutrients through natural environments. These organisms respond actively to their surroundings, creating relationships that determine population sizes and community structure: predators control prey numbers, competitors drive species to specialize in distinct ecological roles, and symbiotic partners […] - [Niche in Ecology](https://simplyecologist.com/ecology/niche-in-ecology/): A niche represents the complete role an organism plays within its ecosystem—not just where it lives, but how it feeds, reproduces, and interacts with both living and nonliving elements around it. This concept proves essential because niche differentiation, or the division of resources among species, allows competitors to coexist without depleting what they need to survive. Darwin’s finches illustrate […] - [Biome in Ecology](https://simplyecologist.com/ecology/biome-in-ecology/): A biome represents one of Earth’s largest recognizable ecological units—a vast region defined by its characteristic climate, soil conditions, and the distinct communities of life that call it home. Average temperature ranges and precipitation patterns shape each biome’s identity, while dominant vegetation types give these regions their recognizable character. Biomes function as Earth’s major life zones, supporting biodiversity and cycling essential […] - [Biosphere in Ecology](https://simplyecologist.com/ecology/biosphere-in-ecology/): The biosphere in ecology refers to Earth’s entire zone of life—a thin, fragile shell extending from deep ocean floors to the upper atmosphere where all living things exist. It’s not a single ecosystem but rather the sum of every ecosystem working together, integrating organisms with water, air, and rock. This interconnected web regulates climate, cycles nutrients, and sustains biodiversity across diverse environments […] - [Habitat in Ecology](https://simplyecologist.com/ecology/habitat-in-ecology/): A habitat in ecology is the specific physical location where an organism lives, encompassing all the environmental features, resources, and conditions that surround it. This concept operates at multiple scales—from a rotting log sheltering beetles to an entire forest ecosystem—and provides the essential context for survival, reproduction, and every biological interaction. Habitats shape communities by enabling ecosystem services such as water filtration, pollination, […] - [Ecosystem in Ecology](https://simplyecologist.com/ecology/ecosystem-in-ecology/): An ecosystem in ecology comprises all living organisms—plants, animals, fungi, and microorganisms—interacting with nonliving components such as water, air, soil, and sunlight within a defined area where energy flows and nutrients cycle continuously. This framework allows scientists to examine relationships among species and predict how changes ripple through communities, from tiny pond habitats to vast rainforests. Ecosystems provide essential services including clean […] - [Community in Ecology](https://simplyecologist.com/ecology/community-in-ecology/): A community in ecology refers to assemblages of different species populations living and interacting within the same geographical area. These interactions create frameworks for energy flow and nutrient cycling that maintain ecosystem health. Communities exist at various spatial scales from microhabitats to extensive ecosystems, with examples including coral reefs, temperate forests, and tide pools. Through predation, competition, and mutualism, these biological […] - [Population in Ecology](https://simplyecologist.com/ecology/population-in-ecology/): A population in ecology comprises individuals of the same species living in a specific area at a particular time. It functions as a fundamental ecological unit characterized by size, density, distribution, age structure, and growth rate. Populations shape and respond to environmental conditions through birth, death, immigration, and emigration processes. These dynamics influence competition, predation, resource availability, and ecosystem health. […] - [Organism in Ecology](https://simplyecologist.com/ecology/organism-in-ecology/): Definition of Organism in Ecology An organism represents the fundamental unit of ecological study, defined as any living entity capable of functioning independently while responding to its environment. From single-celled bacteria to complex multicellular animals, organisms share fundamental characteristics despite their structural diversity. Each maintains homeostasis, metabolizes nutrients, responds to stimuli, reproduces, and evolves over time.. Keystone species such as sea […] - [Eli Frey Links](https://simplyecologist.com/eli-frey-links/): Simply Ecologist — Links I’m Eli Frey — ecologist, science communicator, and wildlife blogger living in Sri Lanka Explore My Wildlife & Ecology Blog Browse Books, Guides & Wildlife Merch LK SRI LANKA TRAVEL AND WILDLIFE Wildlife Tours, Articles and Tips Get the Ecology Glossary 1500+ terms definition with real life examples Start & Grow […] - [SCIENCE COMMUNICATION](https://simplyecologist.com/science-communication/): I created this Science Communication Hub to help you share knowledge, grow your voice online, and build a meaningful platform around science and storytelling.
